CAPE TOWN – The Democratic Alliance has welcomed confirmation that South African National Defence Force deployment in support of police will begin on Wednesday 1 April, but warned that stringent parliamentary oversight remains essential.
The announcement came during a joint meeting of parliamentary defence and security committees on Friday 27 March, where DA NCOP member Nicholas Gotsell emphasised that whilst communities facing daily violence deserve urgent intervention, serious gaps in the deployment plan demand immediate attention.
Budget transparency concerns
Parliament lacks clarity on how the R823 million allocated to the deployment will be spent, according to Gotsell. The DA has questioned whether proper financial controls, registers and audits are in place for both the substantial budget and every weapon and round of ammunition committed to the operation.
“Given the scale of corruption investigations already facing the Department of Defence, oversight over this budget is not a technical exercise; it is a constitutional duty,” Gotsell stated.

The briefing revealed stark reality regarding resource limitations, with basic capabilities remaining constrained including vehicle availability and narcotics detection dogs – described as fundamental tools in combating drugs, firearms and organised crime.
Gotsell criticised the situation where law enforcement confronts highly organised criminal networks whilst refusing to expand basic policing powers to capable governments, yet lacks essential operational resources.
Private security cooperation questioned
Officials confirmed the operation would involve cooperation with private security companies, but could not provide assurance that these firms have been properly vetted to ensure no links to criminal or gang networks.
In provinces where organised crime has infiltrated legitimate businesses, particularly in areas such as the Cape Flats, this presents a risk that cannot be ignored, the DA warned.

The party emphasised that whilst it supports the deployment, such support must accompany rigorous oversight measures.
