The opening two matches of the 2026 Carling Currie Cup Premier Division delivered pulsating drama that went down to the wire, with the DHL Stormers and Hollywoodbets Sharks both snatching nerve-shredding victories through late heroics on Friday evening.

Ungerer breaks Griquas hearts in Cape Town

The Stormers escaped with a 25-19 triumph over defending champions Griquas at DHL Stadium despite extraordinary first-half indiscipline that threatened to derail their campaign before it had begun. Eleven penalties conceded resulted in two yellow cards before the break, leaving the hosts playing stretches at 13 men against the champions who arrived with four straight wins over the Stormers.

Griquas led 12-8 at halftime through Sako Makata’s try, controlling territory and backing their powerful driving maul. Hooker Vernon Paulo’s try kept the Stormers within touching distance despite the chaos, whilst Mfundo Ndhlovu’s second-half score drew the sides level and sparked genuine belief.

Griquas hit back through Lourens Oosthuizen and replacement Tiaan Lange, George Whitehead converting both to establish what appeared a winning position. A third Stormers yellow card left them facing the final quarter undermanned once more, with Griquas holding a narrow advantage and controlling 61% possession.

But scrumhalf Stefan Ungerer found a decisive gap with time almost expired, before Dominic Malgas held his nerve on the conversion despite running the shot clock dry. When the ball sailed through, time was up and the Stormers had snatched victory from chaos.

Matthews hat-trick inspires Sharks survival

In Mbombela, debutant Lyle Matthews announced himself spectacularly with a first-half hat-trick as the Sharks survived a Pumas fightback to prevail 26-24. The Pumas dominated territory early, Lundi Msenge crossing after slick backline movement for a 5-0 lead that reflected territorial superiority.

Matthews responded with instinctive brilliance, chipping through and stepping inside to score against the run of play. Two more tries followed, both from Sharks scrum dominance, to complete his treble and establish a 19-5 halftime cushion.

The Pumas roared back through Chyle van Zyl’s driving maul try before clawing to within two points. With the hosts camped on the Sharks line in the dying minutes, the visitors held possession through an extraordinary 24 consecutive phases for close to two minutes before Tim Swiel hoofed the ball dead.

Both matches delivered the drama Currie Cup rugby promises. Both winners survived by their fingernails.
