The Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) says the first day of campus evacuations has helped de-escalate tensions following violent disruptions.

Many students have since returned home, while increased security patrols have been deployed for those who remain.

CPUT spokesperson Lauren Kansley told TygerBurger on Thursday 20 August that the university’s priority was preventing further violence and keeping students safe.

“We are pleased that day one of the CPUT campus evacuations has been successful. Many students have taken the opportunity to go home,” Kansley said.

“For us, the measure of success is simple – that we de-escalate violence, avoid a loss of life and bring calm to our campuses. We believe we have achieved that.”

Kansley said CPUT had strengthened overnight patrols to protect students who remained in residences and ensure those who wanted to leave could do so safely.

She stressed that the process was an evacuation and not an eviction.

“This was an evacuation and it gave those who were feeling unsafe an opportunity to go. Many have and we are happy that they did.”

Talks on the cards

The disruptions followed student protests over several issues, including CPUT’s Draft Financial Recovery Plan, which was subsequently withdrawn.

Kansley said talks involving the relevant parties were expected as efforts continued to resolve the situation.

“Talks are on the cards and will happen. We welcome intervention from the DHET,” she said.

It remains unclear when students and staff will return.

CPUT said campuses would only reopen once they were considered safe.

“Campuses need to be deemed safe before we invite anyone back,” Kansley said.
