Car smuggler sentenced in Mokopane Regional Court

Court sentences vehicle smuggler to 20 years for cross-border car theft

MOKOPANE -The Mokopane Regional Court sentenced vehicle smuggler Mosa Allen Dlamini (34) to 20 years’ imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to charges relating to the illicit smuggling of stolen vehicles across South African borders. He was convicted on Tuesday on charges including possession of stolen motor vehicles, fraud, money laundering, and falsification of vehicle registration plates. The charges involved two high-value vehicles: a Toyota Land Cruiser and a Toyota Fortuner.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) welcomed the sentence. NPA Limpopo spokesperson Mashudu Malabi, said Dlamini admitted to operating as a runner for an organised cross-border vehicle-smuggling network. He was responsible for transporting stolen vehicles through Limpopo border posts for delivery to neighbouring countries. “He further admitted to falsifying vehicle registration number plates and tampering with engine numbers to conceal the true origin and identity of the vehicles,” said Malabi.

She said between August 2024 and February 2025, SAPS members in Polokwane, Musina, and Louis Trichardt arrested Dlamini on two separate occasions while in possession of the two high-end cars. Investigations revealed both vehicles had been stolen in and around Pretoria and Johannesburg during 2024.
In aggravation of sentence, State Advocate George Sekhukhune highlighted the seriousness and prevalence of vehicle theft and smuggling and their detrimental impact on economic growth and public safety. While acknowledging that Dlamini had assisted law enforcement in uncovering similar offences, the State argued that a substantial custodial sentence remained appropriate.

The State further submitted that Limpopo is increasingly used as a gateway by vehicle smuggling syndicates, urging the court to impose a sentence that would deter others involved in similar activities. The court agreed and sentenced Dlamini to an effective 20 years’ direct imprisonment.

The Director of Public Prosecutions in Limpopo, Adv. Ivy Thenga, commended the prosecutor and investigating team for their diligent work in securing the conviction and sentence. She reiterated the NPA’s commitment to dismantling criminal syndicates involved in vehicle theft and cross-border smuggling, noting that such offences devastate victims and undermine public confidence in the justice system.
According to current retail pricing, the Toyota Fortuner retails between R685,900 and R1.2 million, while the Toyota Land Cruiser ranges from R1.2 million to R3 million.
