Shukri Conrad has waved away the social media storm surrounding Sunday’s heated on-field exchange between Proteas captain Temba Bavuma and wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock, insisting the viral moment means “nothing” inside the changing room and urging fans not to manufacture a storyline where none exists.

The incident, captured during the Pink ODI at the Wanderers, has racked up nearly 900,000 views on X and sparked fierce debate among supporters. The footage shows Bavuma signalling to the bowler’s end umpire to review a “not out” LBW decision against Australia’s Xavier Bartlett, who was blazing away on 50 off 28 balls.

What ignited controversy was De Kock’s body language, the veteran gloveman appeared openly dismissive of his skipper’s judgment, creating a visibly tense exchange. Bavuma stood firm, overriding his passionate teammate with an expletive-laden call to send the decision upstairs.

The moment has thoroughly divided opinion, with many criticising De Kock’s conduct as inappropriate for a senior player, criticism amplified by the fact his assessment proved entirely incorrect.

Conrad, speaking to Cape Argus, however, was having none of it when questioned about the flashpoint yesterday. “Whenever Quinny gets involved, I just laugh, hey… Yeah, look, going viral on socials means nothing to me, and it certainly means nothing inside the changing room,” the Proteas head coach said.

“I don’t even know what it fully stemmed from, but it’s just the two of them in the heat of battle. I saw a clip, somebody showed it to me, and I turned it off halfway through with a good chuckle because that’s what we want. We don’t want boring guys who just stand around, and Quinny is always going to give his opinion.

Beyond the social media furore, the on-field action delivered in spectacular fashion. The Proteas beat Australia by 32 runs, posting a formidable 365/9 before dismantling the tourists for 333 in reply.

Bavuma anchored the innings with a magnificent century (103), setting the platform after arriving at the crease following the first delivery. His composed knock absorbed early pressure and laid the foundations for David Miller’s explosive 142.

“It’s nice to contribute with the bat,” Bavuma said. “Coming in just after the first ball, I was able to take my time and build partnerships… It’s always nice to contribute to the team’s cause.”

The captain also praised the occasion itself. “It’s fantastic. The guys in the changing room were talking about the cheers everyone was getting. It’s always an event we look forward to, playing for a good cause. And we seem to play quite decently in the pink clothing as well.”

South Africa have already sealed the series 2-0 heading into tomorrow’s final match in Potchefstroom, where they’ll look to complete a clean sweep.
