The community of Bonteheuwel welcomed the abandoning of bail by one of the suspects allegedly involved in an extortion ring in the area.

Three shops robbed

The suspect was arrested after at least three spaza shops were robbed in the area and one man was killed. Earlier this week, she abandoned her bail bid and will remain in custody until mid-September, when the matter returns to court.

Angus McKenzie, local ward councillor welcomed this week’s development.

“This case has been one that I have followed exceptionally closely from the outset. For months, I have worked alongside law enforcement agencies, community members, and affected business owners because no person should be forced to live or trade under the threat of intimidation or extortion. Every resident deserves access to safe, functioning local businesses, and every honest business owner, whether local or foreign national, deserves the opportunity to operate without fear,” says McKenzie.

“The outcome is an important milestone. While the criminal case is far from over, it demonstrates what can be achieved when communities, investigators, and the justice system work together with determination and purpose.”

Commendable

McKenzie commended the investigating officer for compiling what appears to be a strong case, as well as the Bishop Lavis Magistrates’ Court for ensuring that justice is allowed to take its course.

“Their professionalism and commitment send a clear message that organised criminality will not go unchallenged. Most importantly, I want to thank the residents of Bonteheuwel. It was your courage to speak out, to share information, and to place your trust in the authorities that enabled investigators to do their work effectively. Without the support of the community, progress like this would not have been possible.

“This case should serve as a reminder that when we refuse to be intimidated, when we stand together, and when we support law enforcement, we can make our communities safer. We can protect honest businesses, restore confidence to our neighbourhoods, and send a clear message that Bonteheuwel will not surrender to those who seek to profit through fear and violence. Our work is not finished. I will continue to monitor this matter closely and will continue working with all stakeholders to ensure that those responsible for terrorising our community are held accountable through the courts,” he says.
