In an effort to empower young people, the Girl Effect organisation has opened a youth hub at KTC in Gugulethu early this month, where it will offer various programmes. More than 100 young people between the ages of 18 and 24 are taking part in the programme.
Girl Effect is a nonprofit organisation that works with and for girls to break down the barriers they face and unleash their full potential.

A safe space for young people

Ward 38 councillor Suzanne Zumana described the youth hub as a safe space for young people. She said they are trying to get them off the streets. She said the programme accommodates both genders.

“They are running various programmes, including baking skills, dialogues where they discuss various issues including gender-based violence, five-a-side soccer leagues every Wednesday, and there will also be a crèche open 24 hour a day,” said Zumana.
She stated that the hub is open to everyone. However, she said the actual hub will be officially opened later this year as they are still finalising the construction of its structure.

Temporary home at Sanco hall

“For now, they are operating from the Sanco hall. As soon as the structures are completed, they will move into them. I’m not sure exactly when they will finish building it. We are pleased to have such an initiative, and we believe it will have a positive impact on our children,” said Zumana.

One of the members, Anele Tukwayo, described the hub as a great initiative. He said it keeps him busy.
“I no longer roam the streets because I am always here. We are able to share our problems and experiences without fear of being judged,” he concluded.
