In an effort to keep children away from the streets, Ward 38 in KTC, Gugulethu has erected a multi-purpose play and sports facility outside the KTC Community Hall. The project, which began late last month, was completed by the middle of this month.
Ward 38 councillor Suzanne Zumana described the facility as “a breath of fresh air”. She related how young people of the area had been struggling for a long time.
What the facility offers
“Our children had nowhere to go. Mostly they played at the Zolani Centre in Nyanga or Gugulethu Sports Complex. The new facility includes basketball, netball, five-a-side soccer as well as outdoor gym equipment.”
Safety concerns before the sports facility
She said there previously had been no playground in KTC and some children had been robbed while travelling to other areas to play.
“We started this playground from scratch. The outdoor gym equipment was installed last year. We’re hoping the children and community will protect it.”

Community leaders support
South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) committee member Lumkile Msila described the construction of the multi-purpose recreational facility for children as part of broader community development.
“We are preparing our future leaders. Not all children excel academically, so it is important to give them opportunities to play.”
