Officers attached to the Traffic Services Highway Patrol Unit arrested a suspect on a range of charges on the N2 near Mew Way last night.

The City’s traffic services spokesperson, Kevin Jacobs, said the officers were on patrol on the N2 outbound just before 19:00 on Thursday 10 September when they spotted a Mercedes swerving across the roadway.

He said after stopping it officers detected a strong smell of alcohol on the driver’s breath.

“He consented to a breath-alcohol test that returned a reading of 0.67 mg/L, nearly three times the legal limit. The officers then spotted what appeared to be a firearm in the vehicle, prompting a search. They recovered an imitation firearm, a bag of what appeared to be cocaine and three rounds of ammunition.”

Jacobs said the driver was arrested on charges of drunken driving, possession of an imitation firearm, of drugs and ammunition.

Suspect handed to Khayelitsha police for processing

“The suspect and seized items were handed over to Khayelitsha police for further investigation and processing. The incident highlights the importance of proactive patrols by the Traffic Services Highway Patrol Unit, particularly on high-risk routes, in identifying dangerous driving behaviour and removing potentially dangerous items from the road.”
