Three people were gunned down in KTC informal settlement, Gugulethu on Tuesday 22 September. The incident occurred in Z Memani Street at 09:57.

Provincial police spokesperson Col André Traut said Gugulethu police were investigating a triple murder following a shooting incident.

“Gugulethu officers responded to the scene at 09:57 and discovered the bodies of three males, who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds to their upper bodies and heads. All three victims were declared dead at the scene.”

Alleged robbery may be linked to killings

Preliminary information from reliable sources suggest the dead were among those fighting over the spoils of an alleged robbery of workers who were installing fibre in the area.

“This information forms part of the investigation and has not yet been confirmed. The circumstances surrounding the shooting, including the motive, are still unknown.”

The investigation has been taken over by detectives from the Provincial Serious Violent Crime Unit, who are working to establish the circumstances that led to the incident and to identify those responsible.

Community leader speaks out

A community leader who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals said the dead were among those who robbed workers in the area.

“There are rumours that these criminals were fighting about the share. They robbed people who were installing fibre of their belongings. They were fighting about the share. We are happy about what happened because it is one less [criminal] to us,” he said, adding that extortion and robbery are very high in the area.
