Cape Town Opera (CTO) will present a new production of Georges Bizet’s Carmen at the Artscape Opera House from 19 to 31 May, marking the company’s return to classic repertoire with one of opera’s most popular works.

The production, directed by Steven Stead, will be set in 1931-’32 Seville and features CTO’s vocal ensemble, children’s chorus, and the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra under conductor Tim Murray.

The opera tells the story of passion, freedom and fate through Bizet’s score, which includes well-known pieces such as the “Habanera” and “Toreador Song”.

Stellar cast leads production

Cape Town Opera house soloist Nonhlanhla Yende will perform the title role, with tenor Lukhanyo Moyake as Don José. Guest artist Vuvu Mpofu takes the role of Micaëla, while baritone Conroy Scott will play the bullfighter Escamillo. The cast also includes Brittany Smith as Frasquita and Khayakazi Madlala as Mercédès.

The creative team includes set designer Greg King, costume designer Maritha Visagie, and choreographer Naoline Quinzin, who will work with professional dancers to incorporate movement into the production.

The opening performance on Tuesday 19 May coincides with Artscape’s 55th anniversary celebration. According to Cape Town Opera’s artistic director Magdalene Minnaar, the production aims to offer both emotional intensity and contemporary theatrical vision.

Carmen, which premiered in 1875, remains one of the world’s most frequently performed operas, known for its memorable characters and melodies.

Six performances are scheduled: evening shows at 19:00 on 19, 21, 27 and 29 May, with matinee performances at 14:00 on 23 and 31 May.

Tickets are available at Webtickets or the Artscape box office on 021 421 7695. Student, pensioner and group discounts are available with appropriate identification or minimum booking requirements.
