Jasprit Bumrah delivered a bowling masterclass to destroy South Africa on Day One of the first test between the two nations. The Indian pace spearhead claimed five wickets for just 27 runs at Eden Gardens.
South Africa won the toss and elected to bat on a dry Kolkata surface. Openers Ryan Rickelton and Aiden Markram started confidently, racing to 57 without loss.
Bumrah struck in the 11th over with a perfect delivery to bowl Rickelton. The ball landed on the seam and moved away to hit off stump.
The Indian fast bowler had built pressure during his opening spell. He conceded only nine runs in his first five overs on a tricky pitch.
Bumrah then removed Aiden Markram with a delivery that kicked from good length. South Africa collapsed from 57 for none to 62 for two wickets.

The 30-year-old bowler became the first fast bowler since Dale Steyn to achieve this feat. No fast bowler had taken five wickets on Day One in India since 2006.
Bumrah emphasized patience as the key to success on challenging Indian pitches. He noted that excessive movement can make length selection extremely difficult for bowlers.
The Eden Gardens surface offered variable bounce and unpredictable seam movement throughout. Bumrah adapted his approach as the ball softened during his long spell.
Mohammed Siraj struggled at the other end, conceding 25 runs in three overs. Bumrah’s disciplined bowling provided the perfect contrast to his bowling partner’s wayward start.
South Africa eventually folded for just 159 runs in their first innings total. India reached 37 for one wicket in reply before bad light stopped play.
Yashasvi Jaiswal fell early but KL Rahul and Washington Sundar survived until stumps. The pair batted through fading light to prevent further Indian casualties.
Kagiso Rabada missed the match through injury, weakening South Africa’s bowling attack significantly. The visitors face an uphill battle to compete on this challenging surface.
Bumrah’s 16th five-wicket haul demonstrated his mastery of subcontinental conditions perfectly.
