Springbok prop Boan Venter has announced his departure from Edinburgh Rugby, making the “tough decision” to return to his native South Africa after signing with Johannesburg-based Emirates Lions.
The 28-year-old loosehead prop, who has emerged as a trusted regular in the Springbok setup during 2025, will complete Edinburgh’s URC season before beginning his new chapter at Ellis Park.
Initially targeting a Scotland cap through residency qualification, Venter’s career trajectory transformed dramatically when Rassie Erasmus selected him for the Springbok squad in 2025. Since making his Test debut against Georgia, the powerful prop has featured eight times for South Africa.
“It was a tough decision to leave a club that has become home, but I am excited for the opportunity with the Emirates Lions and to be closer to family,” reflected Venter on his impending departure.
Since joining Edinburgh in February 2021, the 118kg Somerset West-born forward has made an indelible mark on Scottish rugby. His impressive statistics speak volumes: 19 tries across 96 appearances, including a historic achievement as the first prop to score a hat-trick for Edinburgh in the professional era against Ospreys in January 2022.

Venter emerged through the Sharks academy system before starting his European adventure with the Scottish capital club, quickly becoming a fan favourite through his dynamic ball-carrying and scoring ability.
“I want to thank all Edinburgh fans for their incredible support over the years,” Venter expressed. “I have enjoyed every moment in this amazing city and wearing the jersey. I can assure everyone that I will give my absolute all for this badge and my teammates right up until the final whistle.”
Head Coach Sean Everitt praised Venter’s contributions, acknowledging both his on-field impact and international recognition.
“On behalf of everyone at Edinburgh Rugby, I would like to thank Boan for his services over the past five years,” stated Everitt. “He has been integral to our squad and certainly made his mark, which was rewarded with his international call-up. We wish him and his family the very best for his move back to South Africa and his new challenge with the Lions.”
