BLOEMFONTEIN – The police in the Mangaung Metro received a tip-off. Members of the community informed them about a drug post in Douglas Street in the city’s central business district (CBD).
The team followed up on this information and a search was conducted. A pot and three black plastic containers with loose dagga were found. In addition, 495 zip-lock bags (bankies) containing dagga and 115 hand-rolled dagga cigarettes (zol) were discovered. Cash believed to be proceeds of drug sales was also seized. The 20-year-old drug dealer was immediately placed under arrest.

Foot and vehicle patrols were planned for the Ashbury, Opkoms, and Bloemside 1 suburbs. Stop-and-search actions were also planned in the Heidedal Police Station area. Six suspects were arrested in Parish Avenue, Willem Plaatjies and Geelvis streets, and Anna Magerman Crescent. They were all in possession and dealing in drugs.
Crystal Meth and Mandrax tablets were seized by the police. A man (31) was also arrested for possession of drugs in Govan Mbeki Street in Thaba Nchu. Two other drug peddlers were arrested in the Kopanong Police Station precinct.
This formed part of Operation Shanela II. Along with the drug busts, the police also arrested 11 undocumented persons. They were aged between 34 and 46 years. These arrests happened across all stations in the Mangaung district.
One suspect was found in possession of suspected stolen property in the Bloemspruit area. Others were found in contravention of the Road Traffic Act 93/96. They were driving motor vehicles whilst under the influence of an intoxicating substance.
