BLOEMFONTEIN – A worker has died from her injuries after suffering critical burns at one of the fast-food restaurants located at Thakaneng Bridge Student Centre on the University of the Free State campus in Bloemfontein.

The woman succumbed to her injuries on Sunday at Busamed Hospital, a local private healthcare facility. Circumstances surrounding the incident and the cause of her death remain unclear.

Nova News learnt that the woman was on duty at the fast-food eatery, Chick’s ‘n Wings last Wednesday – 1 July – when the incident occurred that morning. She was rushed to Busamed Hospital for emergency medical treatment, according to sources. She suffered severe burn wounds to her upper body, face, one arm and part of her leg, and did not survive her injuries.

The victim has been identified as Thandiwe Solane, who was originally from Bultfontein, a town situated roughly 100km north-northwest of Bloemfontein. A visibly grief-stricken family member, confirmed her tragic death during Nova News’ visit to an apartment she had been renting in Bochabela.

The fast-food business had been closed ever since the incident took place, while other businesses continued operating at the student complex on the UFS campus.

At the time of publication, no response had been received from the police, the Department of Labour or UFS regarding the incident and the worker’s death.
