PRETORIA – A South African Police Service captain has been commended for his bravery after being lowered from a helicopter into a crocodile-infested river to secure a euthanised crocodile containing human remains.

A Gauteng businessman (59) had been reported missing after his vehicle was found trapped at a low-lying bridge in the river more than a week ago.

Following an extended search for the missing man, a crocodile was identified in the river which may have carried out an attack on the businessman.

Permission was obtained to euthanize the crocodile.

Captain Johan “Pottie” Potgieter was yesterday hoisted from a SANParks helicopter into the Komati River during a complex operation to recover the body of a missing person.

Potgieter secured the dead crocodile from the river using a rope under dangerous conditions before it was lifted and relocated, enabling police and experts to recover possible human remains found in the animal’s intestines.

The body parts have been sent for DNA analysis to confirm the identity of the deceased.

Acting National Commissioner of SAPS, Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane, praised Captain Potgieter for his actions.

“Captain Potgieter’s willingness to place his own life at risk, going far beyond the call of duty, reflects the unwavering commitment of SAPS members to serve and protect, even in the face of danger that could have cost him his life,” said Lieutenant General Dimpane.

The police service described the operation as highly dangerous and said the captain’s actions reflected the highest standards of service and dedication.
