ZWELITSHA, EASTERN CAPE – The Eastern Cape police are investigating eight counts of escaping from lawful custody following the escape of eight detainees from the Afsondering Police Station cells in Maluti on 4 April 2026.
The circumstances surrounding the incident will form part of the ongoing investigation.
The escapees have been identified as Asiphe Yawu, Abraham Gobozi, Kwanele Mzala, Siphelele Mkhulisi, Thabo Nana, Siphelele Nondolo, Anele Ludidi, and Sinethemba Mazendala. All eight men are considered dangerous criminals, and members of the public are strongly cautioned against attempting to apprehend them personally.

Police have opened a separate case of aiding and abetting to determine whether the escape was facilitated by others, suggesting authorities are examining the possibility of inside assistance or external coordination in the breakout. The investigation will scrutinise security protocols and procedures at the facility to establish how eight detainees managed to escape simultaneously.
Members of the public who may have information that could assist in the investigation or help locate the escapees are urged to contact the investigating team directly. Sergeant Matabane can be reached on 076 342 4033, whilst Constable Mantelefu is available on 073 109 7962 for any information related to the case.
