The ensembles of the Odeion School of Music at the University of the Free State (UFS) form a vital part of student training, offering practical, performance-based experience alongside individual study.
To celebrate the 80th year of existence, an anniversary concert featuring its ensembles will be held on 30 April at the Odeion.
Through orchestras, chamber groups, jazz ensembles, and more, students develop technical skill, stylistic awareness, and collaborative musicianship across diverse genres.

The programme prepares versatile, professional musicians equipped for both local and international stages.
The four ensembles at the OSM will take part in the programme. They are: The Pan African Jazz Ensemble, founded in 2025 by Dr Joseph Kunnuji, introduces students to improvisation, arranging, and jazz theory, while exploring African jazz traditions. Its repertoire includes American and South African standards, works by African composers, and original pieces. The ensemble welcomes musicians from across the UFS and broader Bloemfontein community.
The OSM Vocal Ensemble, under the direction of Dr Albertus Engelbrecht, focuses on the artistic development of voice students. With an emphasis on operatic and chamber repertoire, it provides regular performance opportunities that cultivate technical and expressive excellence.
The Free State Youth Wind Ensemble is a community-based group of over 30 woodwind, brass, and percussion players.

Drawing members from schools, UFS, and the wider community, it performs regularly at concerts, festivals, and public events, offering valuable ensemble experience.
The OSM Camerata, the school’s chamber orchestra, was established in 2012 as a “catalyst for excellence”.
It has received international recognition, including first prizes at the Ictus International Music Competition (USA) in 2017 and 2018.

Under the direction of Marius Coetzee, the ensemble maintains a high artistic standard, performing a wide-ranging repertoire including works by South African composers. Admission the concert that starts at 19:00, are free.
The programme promises everything from jazz and opera to orchestral and wind repertoire – a dynamic programme highlighting the rich musical talent of the UFS students and community.
