Court sentenced elder brother for assaulting his younger sibling.

LADYBRAND – The Ladybrand Regional Court has slapped a 26-year-old man with a three-year imprisonment sentence for assaulting his eight-year sibling. The sentence, handed down on Wednesday 15 April, is suspended for five years on condition that the accused is not convicted of a similar offence during the suspension period.

WO Mmako Mophiring, spokesperson for police in the Thabo Mofutsanyana District, said the man’s conviction and sentencing resulted from an investigation by the Ladybrand Family, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit. His name has been withheld to protect the victim’s identity.

Mophiring said the incident occurred in May last year at the siblings’ home in the Manyatseng township. The elder brother was helping the victim with schoolwork at the time.

“On 22 May 2025, a teacher noticed that a learner had visible injuries, including a bruised eye. Upon enquiry, the child revealed that he had been assaulted by his older brother for failing to understand his homework,” Mophiring said.

The court reached its decision based on the strength of evidence presented during proceedings.

“This case sends a clear message to parents, guardians, and community members that any form of abuse or assault against children is a criminal offence and will be dealt with in accordance with the law. Each case, however, is adjudicated on its own merits,” said Mophiring.
