Four shopping malls in Bloemfontein set competition aside to deliver care, dignity and hope through the Retailers Giving Back initiative as part of the local Mandela Day Drive.

Through the Retailers Giving Back initiative, Mimosa Mall, the Loch Logan Waterfront, Lemo Mall and Fleurdal Mall joined retailers and community partners to assemble 100 newborn care bags for vulnerable mothers and babies in Bloemfontein.

The initiative was undertaken in partnership with Cover A Child’s Heart NPO, a registered Bloemfontein-based organisation supporting mothers and newborn babies receiving care at local labour clinics and hospitals.

Each care bag included essential baby and maternal care items such as blankets, nappies, wipes, toiletries, feeding bottles, socks, beanies and maternity pads.

Representatives of the participating malls gathered at Mimosa Mall to pack the items into thoughtful care packages, created not only to meet immediate needs but to remind recipients that their community cares.

The campaign culminated in a community handover on Friday 17 July with representatives visiting the Mangaung Community Health Centre (MUCPP), National District Hospital and Pelonomi Hospital alongside Cover A Child’s Heart NPO, with transport support by Human Auto Bloemfontein.

Retailers Giving Back marked a meaningful first for the malls, proving that businesses operating in the same retail space can still work together for a shared community purpose.

“Retail is ultimately about people, and this initiative showed what is possible when we look beyond our individual malls and focus on the community we all serve,” said Neelofar Issa, General Manager of Mimosa Mall.

“Every bag was made possible through many people choosing to contribute what they could. Together, those individual acts became something meaningful for 100 mothers and their newborn babies.”

While the bags provided practical support, the campaign carried a broader message: meaningful change becomes possible when businesses, retailers and communities choose to work together.

The success of Retailers Giving Back reflects the strength of collaboration within Bloemfontein and demonstrates the positive impact the retail sector can create when businesses unite around a shared cause.

Through this collective effort, 100 baby bags became far more than donations. Each bag became a message of dignity, care and community, packed by many hands and given with one heart.

The team being led by Issa, Meryl Henning of Loch Logan Waterfront, Nthato Musa of Lemo Mall and Ilse Pretorius of Fleurdal Mall, said they appreciate all stakeholders, partners and tenants who supported this worthy initiative.
