BLOEMFONTEIN – This September will have a golden glimmer when Wings of Hope raises awareness and shows its support for children and families affected by childhood cancer. To celebrate Goldtember (in honour of wanting to turn the streets gold), Minette Fyver is enlisting sponsors to donate gold fabric to wrap trees with as part of the campaign.
“With every tree wrapped in gold, we will raise awareness about childhood cancer,” she explains.
“We want to honour the brave children and their families who are effected by cancer. We want to spark important conversations in our community and show that no child fights alone.”
Minette and her husband, Daniel, knows all about the hardships of fighting cancer. Their youngest daugter Elsunè, better known as NeyNey was diagnosed with brain and bone marrow cancer of the spine when she was 13 months old.
After the treatment, Elsunè was doing well during a time of remission – she was a happy three-year-old when she experienced a relapse. A brain tumor was discovered on the right side of her brain, so treatment began all over again.
Today NeyNey is a healthy seven-year-old, to her parents’ and her older sister Deanette’s delight.
It has been two years that NeyNey has been free from cancer.
The family has already wrapped trees at their home in gold and hope that individuals, businesses and organisations will join in the effort and sponsor more gold fabric.
Call Minette on 079 874 0576 to get involved with Goldtember.

Unstoppable. That was the theme of the Women’s Day shooting event hosted by Koeberg Firearm Solutions on Saturday 15 August. Experienced women shooters, as well as first-timers, had the chance to fire different weapons on the shooting range – assisted by experienced instructors of the Arizona Shooting Range. Read the remarkable story of a young woman fighting cancer who fulfilled her dream of shooting a firearm at the event on bloemnewsexpress.co.za.
