The Ladybrand Regional Court has slapped a 26-year-old man with a three-year prison sentence for assaulting his eight-year-old sibling. The sentence, handed down on Wednesday 15 April, is suspended for five years on condition that the accused is not convicted of a similar offence during the suspension period.
WO Mmako Mophiring, police spokesperson in the Thabo Mofutsanyana District, said this resulted from an investigation by the Ladybrand Family, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit.
“On 22 May 2025, a teacher noticed that a learner had visible injuries, including a bruised eye. Upon enquiry, the child revealed that he had been assaulted by his older brother for failing to understand his homework,” Mophiring said.
The decision was based on evidence presented during proceedings.
