CAPE TOWN – Two men were killed in a motorcycle crash on the N1 near Giel Basson Avenue last night in what appears to be a hit-and-run.

Details at the scene are unclear but a private paramedic service who attended the accident said that two people had died after “being flung onto the N1” near Giel Basson Avenue, during the crash.

Another social media post by a security company seemed to indicate that the men had been riding pillion.

“Emergency services responded to a tragic incident on the N1 at Giel Basson, where two bikers were killed after being flung from their motorcycle during a crash,” the post said. “Our thoughts are with the families and friends affected by this loss.”

According to online traffic reports the crash caused the N1 offramp at Monte Vista to be closed.

None of the posts included details on how the crash had occurred.

Culpable homicide

Sergeant Wesley Twigg of the police’s provincial media office said that no one had been arrested at the scene but a case of culpable homicide had been opened.

“Parow police registered a culpable homicide case for investigation following a fatal crash on Monday night, 5 January, at about 20:40, at the N1 bridge, Giel Basson Drive, Parow, involving a motorcycle,” Twigg said.

“Police members attended to a complaint of an accident and upon arrival on the scene they found two adult males who sustained multiple injuries.”

Twigg said that paramedics declared both men dead at the scene.

“The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation and no arrests have been made,” he said.

Twigg did not confirm if a case of culpable homicide had been opened because the crash was a result of a hit-and-run.

He appealed to anyone with information to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or use the mobile application MySAPS anonymously.
