The defending champions have punched their ticket. Royal Challengers Bengaluru stormed into the IPL play-offs as the first qualified side, delivering a comprehensive 23-run victory over Punjab Kings in Dharamsala on Sunday. Virat Kohli and Venkatesh Iyer provided the firepower with masterful half-centuries, whilst Bhuvneshwar Kumar led a disciplined bowling display to consolidate top spot and secure their passage to the knockout stages.

In-form Kohli struck a blistering 58(37) before Venkatesh’s unbeaten 73 propelled Bengaluru to an imposing 222/4 after being sent in at the picturesque Himalayan venue. Despite a late charge from Marcus Stoinis (37) and Shashank Singh (56), Punjab’s chase faltered at 199/8 as their horror run extended to six successive defeats.

Kohli keeps the runs flowing

Fresh off an unbeaten 105 in Bengaluru’s previous outing, Kohli picked up exactly where he left off. The master batsman dismantled Punjab’s attack with four boundaries and three towering sixes, laying the foundation for a formidable total despite the early loss of opening partner Jacob Bethell for 11.

Kohli found the perfect ally in left-hander Devdutt Padikkal, and the pair reconstructed the innings with a vital 78-run partnership. Padikkal contributed a solid 45 as the duo wrested back momentum and put Bengaluru firmly in the ascendancy.

The former India captain reached his fourth fifty of the season before leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal finally broke through to claim the prized wicket. But by then, the platform had been emphatically set.

Venkatesh takes centre stage

Venkatesh Iyer ensured there would be no let-up in intensity. The all-rounder clobbered Punjab’s bowlers to all corners, racing to his half-century whilst forging an attacking fourth-wicket stand worth 78 with Tim David, who chipped in with a quickfire 28.

Punjab collapse spectaculary

Punjab’s reply started disastrously. Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s seam bowling accounted for both openers/. Priyansh Arya departed for a duck, followed swiftly by Prabhsimran Singh for just two. The early double blow left Punjab reeling and scrambling for recovery.

Skipper Shreyas Iyer’s wretched evening ended on one, and despite useful contributions from Cooper Connolly (37) and Suryansh Shedge (37), Punjab slumped to 93/5. The required rate spiralled, and the mountain grew ever steeper.

Impact substitute Stoinis and the combative Shashank Singh mounted a spirited counter-attack, combining for a 67-run partnership that briefly threatened to ignite Punjab’s chase. But Bengaluru’s bowlers held their nerve, maintaining disciplined lines and strangling the scoring when it mattered most.

Rasikh Salam delivered the killer blows, snaring two wickets in the final over to finish with impressive figures of 3-36 and put the result beyond doubt.

Defending champions hit top gear

The victory represents Bengaluru’s ninth success in 13 matches and confirms their status as genuine contenders to retain the crown they captured for the first time in 18 attempts last year. Top of the points table and already assured of a play-off berth, the defending champions are peaking at precisely the right moment.

For Punjab Kings, the season has turned nightmarish. After storming out of the blocks with six victories and one no-result, they’ve now crashed to six consecutive defeats. The runners-up from last year’s tournament no longer control their own destiny, with qualification for the top four now dependent on other results.
