GQEBERHA – Dancing sensation hailing from Gqeberha Mason “Beasty” Booysen (18), has claimed victory once again at the Red Bull Dance Your Style Gqeberha Qualifier. He defeated his older brother Spidey (25) at the qualifiers on Saturday, February 7.

In a heated sibling showdown, it was Beasty who emerged triumphant for the second time and secured his spot in the national finals at Shark Rock Pier in Summerstrand.

Red Bull Dance Your Style is South Africa’s premier freestyle dance competition that celebrates individual expression and creativity. The no-choreography, no-rules format allows dancers to showcase their unique style across multiple rounds, with competitors battling one-on-one in front of energetic crowds and expert judges.

The matriculant from Chatty Secondary School said: “I didn’t come into today’s competition expecting a win, so I’m very proud of myself and honoured to represent Gqeberha at the national finals. I really enjoyed today’s competition, even though I was a bit nervous to go up against my older brother Spidey in the final round.”

Beasty’s brother Spidey expressed that the final round was a tough one, given that he and Beasty train together and know each other’s strengths. “The second round in the finals was my favourite. Beasty surprised me with moves I have never seen him do before,” commented the dancer from Deja Dance Space in Cleary Park.

Going into the national finals in Bloemfontein, Beasty will be putting in more training, focusing on his creativity, musicality and breathing to become a stronger competitor.

Speaking to the Express, Mason noted that although dancing is a priority, school still comes first. He said he has planned how to prioritise both school and his passion for dance.

Despite recovering from a back injury sustained during another dance competition in Cape Town, where muscle damage affected his spine, Beasty remains determined. “I’m coping and pushing through because I won’t let this stop me from showing my passion,” he emphasised.
