BLOEMFONTEIN – Mosotho May (70) – with a name that directly defines the origin and identity of his Basotho nation – made a lasting impression at the 2026 Lemo Mangaung Marathon, bringing a vivid display of his rich Basotho cultural pride. He finished the gruelling 42,2 km race in 4:37:33, wearing iconic symbols of the Basotho people – a Shweshwe dress and the Mokorotlo hat. The conical straw hat is a national symbol of Lesotho, appearing on the national flag and vehicle licence plates.
This was May’s debut in the marathon, which is gradually growing in stature. It was this year presented for a third time.

“I’m using every race I participate in to showcase resilience and my proud heritage as a Mosotho by running in full Basotho attire. This is a true reflection of my heritage, my roots. As for the dress, I wear it in every race to honour my late beloved mother, Sophia Pogisho May. She is the one who stood by me and encouraged me to participate in sporting events. The dress is part of my trademark; it is a precious symbol of honouring her,” said May.
He revealed that he chose the Shweshwe dress from among all his beloved mother’s belongings after she had passed on. He has transformed the dress, covering it in numerous race numbers, showcasing his milestones across significant races. May’s sporting attire reflecting his African roots resonates with the Lemo Mangaung Marathon’s theme of “Your Roots, Our Route.” The legend was rewarded with R2 500, a special prize for being the oldest to finish the race in under five hours. While none of his family members share his passion for sport or participate in it, he said he was not discouraged.
“I’m the only person in the entire family with a passion to participate in sport, especially road running. My passion for sport and active participation dates to my school days. It continued even while I was employed as a police officer during the apartheid era,” May added.
Currently, he runs for the Department of Correctional Services in the Free State.
