MTHATHA – The All Saints Hall in Mthatha was a vibrant hub of activity as art and talent were showcased at the inaugural O.R. Tambo Dance and Drama Festival on 24 January.
Artists from across all five local municipalities of the district took part in the festivities, which included traditional and contemporary dance performances, drama, music and poetry.
Curating the festival through his company Khanyiso Social Enterprise, legendary South African playwright and award-winning performer Billy Dakada told the Express that he was excited to launch this colourful event.
“This festival was the first of its kind in the area. We crafted it with the specific aim of promoting tourism, creating jobs and empowering the youth through the creative industries, making it a game-changer for Mthatha. It was also a fantastic way for people to immerse themselves in the community’s heritage and have a great time.”
Dakada, who cultivates local talent through drama, dance and creative arts classes at the Mthatha Community Arts Centre, has long expressed frustration that local artists often have to relocate to other provinces to make a name for themselves.
“We have so much talent in the Eastern Cape,” he said, adding that he hopes the government would do more to assist artists and keep them home.
