STANFORD – The Overstrand Municipality is grappling with mounting evidence that the devastating series of fires plaguing the region may be the work of arsonists, following the arrest of three suspects and the discovery of suspicious materials near fire-prone areas.
The latest incident unfolded early on Monday evening 12 January, when an alert member of the public spotted smoke billowing near Stanford graveyard. The witness’s quick thinking led to the arrest of a 23-year-old woman allegedly caught in the act of fire-setting, along with two male accomplices aged 15 and 20.
Municipal officials said that the man saw a female suspect jumping over a fence and immediately called law enforcement while trying to put out the fire until the Fire Department arrived. Law enforcement officers discovered burning cables at the scene, which have been secured as evidence.
The female suspect has been charged under the National Veld and Forest Fire Act (Act 101 of 1998) and later identified her two male associates to authorities. All three suspects are now in custody at Stanford police station, with the case transferred to the Detective Branch for intensive investigation.
Adding to the municipality’s alarm, a member of the public walking along Blue Water Bay at Pearly Beach last week made a chilling discovery – a canister of petrol hidden among the fynbos vegetation. The find has intensified suspicions that the recent fire outbreak may be part of a coordinated campaign of arson targeting the region’s vulnerable natural areas.
The discovery comes as Overstrand Municipality battles what officials describe as an “unprecedented number of fires” that have already consumed thousands of hectares, devastating farming operations, local businesses, and community organisations.
Recognising the severity of the threat, Overstrand Municipality has announced a financial reward for information leading to the arrest and successful prosecution of those responsible for deliberate fire-setting. The move signals the authority’s determination to crack down on suspected arsonists threatening the region’s economic and environmental stability.
The fire crisis has placed enormous strain on the area and it’s resources.
Municipality officials are urging residents and visitors to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity related to fires immediately. “Community vigilance plays a crucial role in protecting lives, property, and the environment,” authorities stated.
