CAPE TOWN – A community is gripped by fear after the third councillor in six years was gunned down in Crossroads on Tuesday, sparking questions about who will be targeted next.
African National Congress (ANC) proportional representation councillor Lazola Gungxe (48) was shot and killed outside Old Crossroads Community Hall shortly after a community meeting ended.
The killing has left residents traumatised and asking when the violence will end.
“We are shocked. This is not the first time our councillors have been killed in this ward,” said a community leader, who spoke on condition of anonymity. “In 2018, our former councillor Elese Depouche was killed. He was followed by councillor Nokuthula Bolitye in 2021, and now Gungxe. We are asking ourselves who will be next.”
The community leader said tension is high in the area.
Provincial police spokesperson Capt FC van Wyk said officers found Gungxe’s body near the entrance of the hall when they arrived at the scene.
“According to reports, there was a community meeting and after it ended, the deceased discussed certain issues with community members. Two males entered, approached the deceased and shot him,” Van Wyk said.
The suspects fled in a white Toyota Avanza with no registration plates. Van Wyk said nothing was taken from the victim and the motive for the attack remains unclear.
The community leader described Gungxe as a dedicated public servant who worked tirelessly for the community.
ANC Dullah Omar Region spokesperson Akhona Jonginamba confirmed the shooting and extended condolences to Gungxe’s family, friends and comrades.
“We call for calm and ask that the law be allowed to take its course. We are in communication with the relevant authorities as a full investigation is underway,” Jonginamba said.
“Our primary focus is on providing support to the bereaved family, colleagues and the community.”
