CAPE TOWN – A 48-year-old ANC proportional representative councillor was shot and killed at a community hall in Crossroads on Tuesday afternoon.

Media reports have identified the victim as Lazola Gungxe, who was gunned down at approximately 15:00 at the Old Crossroads Community Hall in Gwayi Street, Nyanga.

Captain Frederick van Wyk, provincial police spokesperson, said the incident occurred shortly after a community meeting had concluded.

“After the meeting, the deceased discussed certain issues with community members, when two males entered and approached the victim and shot him,” Van Wyk said.

Nyanga police who attended the scene found the man’s body near the entrance of the hall.

The suspects fled in a white Toyota Avanza without registration plates, according to police.

Van Wyk said the motive for the attack has not yet been determined and that nothing was taken from the victim. The suspects remain unidentified.

Police have opened a murder investigation and are appealing to anyone with information about the shooting to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
