VREDEFORT – A 59-year-old man has been arrested for murder following a fatal shooting in Vredefort on Friday morning.

On 7 November at approximately 05:15, Vredefort police received a complaint of shooting at Turten Street, Vredefort.

Upon arrival, police found a 59-year-old male suspect who pointed to the deceased, a 53-year-old man, lying on the ground with gunshot wounds.

The suspect, employed by a private security company, allegedly apprehended the deceased for stealing copper. A struggle ensued, and the suspect further alleged that the deceased attempted to disarm him, resulting in the fatal shooting.

Preliminary investigation has revealed that the deceased was working for another security company.

The suspect is expected to appear before Vredefort Magistrates’ Court on charges of murder.

The incident highlights ongoing concerns about copper theft and the risks faced by security personnel in protecting infrastructure from criminal activity.
