US First Lady Melania Trump and Britain’s Princess Catherine enjoyed a rare joint public appearance on Thursday during President Donald Trump’s second state visit to the UK.

The two high-profile women, usually private, were spotted smiling and relaxed while taking part in activities with young scouts in Frogmore Gardens, Windsor Castle. The “Squirrels” scouts, aged four to six, enjoyed colouring and leaf-printing crafts, followed by a playful parachute game with balls. Both women also presented badges and congratulated the children.

Dressed in suede – Melania in brown, Catherine in green – the pair shared a brief private chat before joining the children. “This is beautiful!” Melania exclaimed as she admired the youngsters’ artwork. Later, they laughed together while shaking the parachute, creating a light-hearted scene for the excited scouts.

‘Wonderful person’

The event marked their first joint engagement, though the two had met briefly the day before during a lavish Windsor Castle banquet. President Trump praised Catherine, calling her “a very wonderful person” who Melania enjoyed spending time with.

The appearance was also a rare public outing for the 55-year-old First Lady, who has kept a low profile since Trump returned to office in January. Melania, mother to 19-year-old Barron, has limited her public engagements to her campaigns, including initiatives on children’s learning and anti-revenge porn legislation.

Catherine, 43, has gradually returned to public life following her cancer diagnosis in March 2024 and her subsequent course of preventative chemotherapy. She announced she was cancer-free in September and resumed her royal duties, focusing on early learning initiatives.

Trump noted Catherine’s resilience, saying, “She went through a lot,” highlighting the shared empathy between the two women as they connected over the children’s activities.
