They came agonisingly close to provincial gold, but Albertyn’s O/12A netball squad are heading to the South African Championships with their heads held high and their hunger only intensified. This is a team that has already made history, and they’re not finished yet.
The Eastern Cape Schools Netball Championships delivered a weekend of high-octane netball that saw Albertyn’s young guns battle their way to the final. When the dust settled, they stood on the podium as Eastern Cape Silver Medallists, a remarkable achievement that tells only half the story.
A final to remember
The provincial final pitted Albertyn against a formidable Sunridge side in what proved to be a fiercely contested affair. Whilst the result didn’t fall in Albertyn’s favour, the performance spoke volumes about the character within this young squad.
Every intercept was fought for. Every centre pass executed with precision. Every defensive rebound contested until the final whistle. The girls left absolutely everything on the court, representing their school with the kind of pride and passion that transcends scorelines.
The coaching masterclass
Behind every successful team stands exceptional coaching, and Albertyn’s run to the provincial final bore the hallmarks of meticulous preparation and tactical acumen. Mrs Engelbrecht and Mrs Jordan guided their charges through a tournament that demanded resilience, adaptability and mental fortitude.
Their dedication and leadership created an environment where young players could dream bigger and reach higher. The belief they instilled in their squad manifested in performances that captured the attention of everyone at the championships.
Destination: Middelburg
The silver lining to provincial silver? Albertyn O/12A have booked their place at the South African Championships in Middelburg, Mpumalanga, where they’ll test themselves against the best schools in the country.
This represents the true reward for their season’s work, an opportunity to measure themselves against elite opposition, to experience the intensity of national competition, and to showcase Eastern Cape netball on the biggest stage available to their age group.
The resilience and fighting spirit displayed throughout the provincial tournament will serve them well when they step onto court in Mpumalanga. They’ve already proven they belong in championship finals. Now they’ll prove they belong among South Africa’s netball elite.
