Operation Prosper yields six arrests in Welkom mining areas

WELKOM – Security forces arrested six suspects during a joint operation targeting illegal mining and crime hotspots in Welkom.

Operation Prosper, a coordinated intervention by the South African Police Service, South African National Defence Force and private mining security companies, continues to focus on identified problem areas in the Free State.

The operation aims to dismantle organised crime syndicates, eradicate illicit mining activities and address gang-related violence.

During vehicle checkpoints and patrols at Bambanani East Shaft on 6 June, three foreign nationals aged 29 and 33 were arrested for trespassing on a mine area and possession of suspected gold-bearing material. A case docket was opened at Welkom Police Station, and the suspects were detained.

In separate incidents related to cable theft in mining areas, a man (23) was arrested for possession of housebreaking implements, while another suspect (29) was arrested for trespassing and possession of suspected gold-bearing material.

The operation also addresses crimes linked to illegal mining, including human trafficking, drug trafficking and illegal firearms.

A search at Manny’s taxi rank led to the arrest of a man (44) for possession of drugs.

All arrested suspects will appear in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court soon.
