CAPE TOWN – Residents of Morningstar in Durbanville, Cape Town, have welcomed the arrest of two suspects following the seizure of more than 200 Mandrax tablets at a local property.
According to Durbanville police station commander, Colonel Gonum Munsamy, community members have expressed relief that a suspected drug dealer is now in police custody.
Patrols
The arrests were made after Public Order Policing officers, who were conducting patrols in the area, reportedly identified suspicious activity.
An operation was subsequently executed, leading to the discovery of drugs on the property and the arrest of a 49-year-old man and his 37-year-old girlfriend.
Police have not released the identities of the suspects, and the names of the officers involved in the operation are also being withheld at this stage.
Munsamy said the successful operation forms part of ongoing efforts to address drug-related crime and improve safety within the community.
Animal safety
The arrested male suspect has also been linked by residents to concerns surrounding two pit bulls kept on the property.
Community members allege that one of the dogs recently attacked a passer-by, leaving the victim unable to work for several days while recovering from her injuries.
According to residents, the victim has been reluctant to open a criminal case due to fears of possible repercussions and retaliation.
Concerns have also been raised regarding the safety of the animals and the potential risk they may pose to members of the public.
It is understood that the South African Police Service (SAPS) requested assistance from local law enforcement authorities regarding the dogs. However, community members claim that no response has yet been received.
Investigations
Police investigations into the drug-related matter are continuing. The suspects remain in custody while the legal process takes its course.
Residents hope the arrests will contribute to a safer environment and send a strong message to those involved in criminal activities in the area.
Munsamy is urging members of the community to come forward with information regarding crime in their areas, assuring them that it will be treated with confidentiality.
The reduction of crime is the joint responsibility of the police, and the community, working together, she added.
