Grey College came, saw, and conquered. In a display of forward brutality married to clinical finishing, the Free State powerhouse dismantled a brave Jeppe side 54-14 on the final day of Absa Wildeklawer, showcasing exactly why they remain one of schoolboy rugby’s most feared outfits.

This was dominance from the opening whistle. Grey camped in Jeppe territory, bullied them at the collisions, and when opportunities presented themselves out wide, they possessed the pace and skill to finish with devastating efficiency. For Jeppe, this was a harsh lesson, though their second-half fight showed commendable character.

Grey set up camp in enemy territory

Grey College got into the Jeppe 22 early in the match and made themselves comfortable. Wave after wave crashed into the Johannesburg side’s defensive line, testing their resolve and searching for cracks. To their credit, Jeppe defended well initially, as they desperately tried to keep Grey at bay.

But sustained pressure eventually tells. Grey finally breached the wall to claim a 7-0 lead, and the floodgates threatened to open. They ran in two more tries through expansive wide play one of them going to Lamla Mgedezi, extending their advantage to 19-0. Jeppe were being outmuscled at every turn, Grey’s brutality in the collisions setting the tone for complete dominance.

With five minutes remaining in the half, Grey unleashed their forward pack in a sustained assault that was as brutal as it was beautiful. Every forward who carried made two or three metres, sucking in defenders and creating momentum. The final carry saw Niel du Randt bust over the line, capping a textbook display of forward power. At 26-0, the rout was well and truly on.

But Grey weren’t finished. From a scrum, Du Randt picked and played, finding Jonathan Drysdale who spotted space and ran in untouched for another try. The scoreboard read 33-0 at halftime, a mountain too steep for Jeppe to climb.

Jeppe show second-half character

Whatever was said in the Jeppe changing room at the interval had an effect. They emerged for the second stanza with renewed vigour, determined not to be bullied by Grey’s pack and intent on salvaging some pride. Getting forward momentum and putting phases together, they finally breached Grey’s line when Joel Akilo dotted down to make it 33-7.

That try was reward for Jeppe’s refusal to surrender, but Grey responded with a moment of pure magic. Following a scrum, Lamla Mgedezi went up for a high ball and, while still airborne, spotted Christoff Crous in space. The magic man delivered a wonderful mid-air pass that sent Crous racing over to extend the lead to 40-7. It was a moment of individual brilliance that summed up Grey’s class.

With 15 minutes remaining, Jeppe showed they were much more clinical in the second half. Putting phases together and working with renewed purpose, they got the ball wide to Glodi Thsipamba who scored in the corner to make it 40-14. The Johannesburg boys were fighting back.

Grey finish in style

Grey College showed great interplay with five minutes remaining to add another try, bringing the score to 47-14. But they saved the best for last. Moving the ball wide with pace and precision, they found space for JD Pieters who beat Jeppe on raw speed to score under the sticks. At 54-14, the final scoreline reflected Grey’s superiority while acknowledging Jeppe’s second-half fight.

Jeppe tried to get it out wide in the final seconds, desperate for one more score, but were tackled into touch as the whistle sounded. Grey College had claimed a comprehensive 54-14 victory built on forward brutality, attacking flair, and clinical execution.
