Affies took time out to rally their troops before making their way down to Stellenbosch.

The schoolboy rugby season has barely found its rhythm, but Saturday’s clash between Paul Roos Gimnasium and Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool already carries the weight of a championship decider.

For the first time since 2015, the Witbulle of Affies will descend upon Stellenbosch for a King Price Derby Series encounter that has the rugby fraternity buzzing with anticipation. This isn’t just another fixture on the calendar, it’s a collision of two powerhouses, both tipped by experts to finish among the nation’s top three school sides this season.

“It is a major occasion when two schools with such rich histories and so many boys come up against each other. This interschools just makes sense. The whole event is something special,” said Corné Uys, Paul Roos’s head coach, capturing the magnitude of Saturday’s showdown.

A rivalry rekindled in the Eikestad

The last time Affies travelled to Stellenbosch, Paul Roos were celebrating their 150th anniversary. The hosts ran out 29–12 victors that day, with a certain Damian Willemse orchestrating proceedings at flyhalf. His opposite number? Ruan de Swardt, who would swap the oval ball for cricket whites and go on to represent the Proteas. Willemse, of course, has since helped the Springboks secure two World Cup titles.

While the teams have met annually since 2022 at the Noord/Suid and Wildeklawer tournaments, there’s something different about an interschools fixture on home soil. The atmosphere, the history, the 31 rugby matches and 17 hockey encounters that will unfold throughout the day, it all adds layers to what promises to be a titanic battle.

The battle in the trenches

The forward exchanges will be brutal, and nowhere will this be more evident than at hooker, where two national talents will lock horns. Paul Roos’s Lehan Barnard and Affies’ lively rake Carl Els were both included in SA Rugby’s under-17 High Performance group last year. Expect fireworks in the set-piece and at the breakdown whenever these two warriors clash.

Affies captain Martin van Niekerk, a towering lock who also earned national recognition, will need to galvanise his pack in hostile territory. Ruan Jacobs, Affies’ head coach, knows where the battle will be won and lost.

“Home-ground advantage will definitely play a role. The team that controls the set pieces and dominates at the breakdowns on the day will walk off as victors,” Jacobs said.

Star power in the backline

Paul Roos captain Tiaan Basson presents a different challenge altogether. The inside centre, who represented Western Province XV at Craven Week last year and earned rave reviews during an exchange stint at Cheltenham College in England, will be the primary playmaker for the hosts. The national under-17 squad member will have Affies’ defensive structure working overtime to contain his powerful running lines.

Alongside Basson in the national setup were teammates Barnard and flyhalf Travis Pheiffer, giving Paul Roos a spine built on proven quality. Pheiffer’s tactical kicking and decision-making will be crucial in dictating territory against a fired-up Affies outfit.

Form guide suggests a classic

Both teams have started their campaigns in ominous fashion. Affies opened with a convincing 34–20 victory over Waterkloof, demonstrating their attacking prowess and defensive solidity. Paul Roos, meanwhile, have gone unbeaten, dispatching HTS Drostdy 24–7 before edging Wynberg Boys’ High 15–5 in a shortened contest during the WP Rugby Day earlier this week.

The Eikestad faithful will create a cauldron of noise, but Affies have shown throughout their storied history that they don’t wilt under pressure. With both sides boasting national representatives, rock-solid set-pieces, and backlines capable of carving up any defence, this fixture has all the ingredients for an absolute cracker.
