Two teams from Durbanville Bowling Club (DBC) excelled by winning their respective divisions in the Western Province Trips League.

The Durbanville A team made history by ending top of the log in the tough Division 1. This victory leads to the promotion of the team to the top Premier division, the first-ever team from Durbanville to achieve this!

After their last game last Saturday against Constantia, the team finished as leaders with 47 points, pipping Fresnaye A (45.5 points). Third in Division 1 was Pinelands A with 35.5 points.

Brilliant season

The Durbanville B team also had a brilliant season, winning Division 3 with 50.5 points. Plumstead A ended second with 48 points and Kelvin Grove A third with 44.5 points.

The WP Trips League, in which each team is made up of two Trips sides, is a relative “youngster” compared to the parallel four-a-side WP Flag League, which has been playing for decades. Games are played over three sets of six ends.

Only playing for three years

“Durbanville only started playing this competition three years ago,” said Morné de Wet, chair of the club’s selection committee.

His dad, the legendary Dup de Wet, played second in the victorious Durbanville A side.

“I’m extremely proud of the guys who represented us; it is the first time ever that we will have a team playing in the Trips Premier division.”

Division 2 was won by Old Oak A team with 45.5 points. Second was Helderberg A with 45 points and third Edgemead A with 37.5 points.

The winners of Division 3 in the WP Trips Competition are (front from left) Ron Phipps, Tommie Snyman, (captain) and Walter Oosthuizen. At the back are Johan Beugger, Keith O’Kennedy (skip) and Gert Bruwer
