CAPE TOWN – A proud team of 13 cyclists from Masiphumelele made their mark at this year’s Cape Town Cycle Tour, showcasing months of dedicated training and determination in one of the world’s most famous cycling events.
The diverse team tackled the 109 km category, which included both experienced cyclists and brave first-timers, showcasing their spirit.
Months of dedication, training sessions and determination all came together on race day, said MasiSports spokesperson Bridget Brooke.
MasiSports, a Cape Town-based non-profit organisation (NPO), provides comprehensive sports and life-skills programmes to schools in Masiphumelele, specifically Ukhanyo Primary and Masi High School.
Cyclists recall route challenges
Founded in 2017 to foster development, the NPO offers coaching, equipment, and facilities for sports like soccer, rugby, netball, chess and cycling to empower youth and promote community upliftment.
“Beyond the times and results, what stood out most was the spirit of the team,” Brooke said.
“Our cyclists showed resilience, teamwork and pure joy as they conquered the course together, creating memories and making history for themselves along the way.”
Akhanyile Kufa, Masiphumlele High School learner, found the race harder than expected.
“Cape Point was definitely the most difficult stretch, but I was happy to complete it in under four hours,” she said. “It was so exciting to race and be part of the team. I have made new friends.”
Oluhle Velaphi from Ukhanyo Primary said cycling is an escape from crime and other social ills plaguing the community.
“Lots of young people my age are in gangsterism and drugs,” he said, “I chose cycling to get away from those things. I love the cycle tour because I feel like a tourist when I get to cycle beyond Masi and Fish Hoek.”
