Framesby beat out St Andrews in a tough affair.
Framesby beat out St Andrews in a tough affair.

There’s something special about grinding out a victory when the pressure is on, and Framesby discovered that winning feeling on Saturday with a hard-fought 24-17 triumph over St Andrew’s College that will have sent ripples of optimism through their camp.

This wasn’t a dazzling display of free-flowing rugby. It was attritional, nerve-shredding stuff, the kind of match that reveals character rather than creates highlight reels. And for the Framesby faithful watching at home, that’s precisely what made it so valuable.

The Makhanda visitors arrived with intent, refusing to play the role of early-season cannon fodder. St Andrew’s College pushed, probed and punished every Framesby error, turning what should have been a comfortable home banker into a genuine contest that remained in the balance until the final whistle.

But when the heat was on and composure became currency, Framesby found the mental fortitude to close out proceedings, a priceless commodity this early in the campaign when combinations are still gelling and match sharpness remains a work in progress.

“Hung on” might sound underwhelming, but ask any seasoned rugby operator and they’ll tell you that victories built on grit often prove more significant than those secured through brilliance. Framesby learned they can win ugly, and that lesson will serve them well when the fixtures intensify and the pressure ratchets up several notches.

The seven-point margin doesn’t tell the full story of a match where both sides showed flashes of quality amidst the inevitable rust that accompanies early-season encounters.

This is February rugby, not April finals football. The rough edges are part of the process, the growing pains before the polish emerges.

What was immediately evident, however, was the physical conditioning on display. Gone are the days when schoolboy sides ambled into the season carrying festive-season weight and working their way into fitness.

For Framesby, the immediate challenge is building on this foundation. They’ve banked a confidence-boosting victory against quality opposition and discovered they possess the mental resilience to win tight contests. The composure they displayed under pressure will become a reference point as tougher assignments loom on the horizon.

St Andrew’s, meanwhile, can take heart from their performance. They travelled to Gqeberha and ran their hosts desperately close, proving they’ll be no pushover when opponents arrive in Makhanda.

Across the Nelson Mandela Bay region on Saturday, spectators were treated to spectacular tries that hinted at the attacking potential brewing in coaching playbooks. Here are more results from the Eastern Cape over the weekend.
