A South African retailer’s farming initiative has been recognised as a world-leading sustainability standard following a four-year independent study by a United Kingdom university.

Woolworths South Africa’s Farming for the Future programme was evaluated in a PhD thesis completed at Coventry University, marking the first comprehensive academic review globally of a retailer-led sustainability assurance programme.

The research, conducted between 2021 and 2025 by Catherine Mazhandu at Coventry University’s Research Centre for Arts and Creative Cultures, found that the programme delivered measurable environmental improvements, strengthened producer resilience and reinforced long-term supply security without depleting natural resources.

The study was supervised by Professor David Bek and funded by the UK Government’s Global Challenges Research Fund.

Farming for the Future programme
The Farming for the Future programme has delivered measurable environmental improvements and strengthened producer resilience over 17 years, according to independent research conducted at Coventry University.

“This independent study affirms what we have seen through our partnerships with farmers since we introduced our FFF programme 17 years ago. It demonstrates that environmental stewardship and commercial resilience go hand in hand,” said Latiefa Behardien, Woolworths Foods Chief Technology and Sustainability Officer.

The research analysed 16 years of programme data from Woolworths’ top 30 suppliers to assess environmental performance trends. A producer survey was distributed to 115 suppliers, with 68 responses received. The methodology also included field visits to observe audits and interviews with Woolworths management, producers, and industry and government representatives.

Kobus Pienaar, Woolworths Foods Technical Manager and Farming for the Future expert, said the programme was helping to restore soil health, improve water management and protect biodiversity, whilst enabling suppliers to recover faster from climate shocks.

Professor Bek, who has researched the programme for 15 years, said long-term partnerships between retailers and growers could strengthen supply chains and protect ecosystems as droughts, extreme weather and climate-related pressures intensify.

“What stands out is the genuine, sustained impact it’s having on South African agriculture,” he said.

Mazhandu said the research was particularly important because Woolworths opened the programme to full independent scrutiny.

“Our analysis shows steady, meaningful improvements that really matter on the ground,” she said.

The study concludes that the programme demonstrates how retailer-led sustainability standards can drive environmental upgrading whilst strengthening economic performance and supply chain resilience.
