KLERKSDORP – Police arrested seven suspects on Tuesday morning after foiling a planned ATM bombing in Klerksdorp’s central business district.
Police spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale said that members of the Special Task Force, the Hawks’ Tactical Operations Management Section and other law enforcement officials arrested the suspects, aged between 30 and 58, before they could execute the crime.
The arrests on 3 March followed intelligence received by the Hawks’ Tactical Operations Management Section about the planned attack. Officers acted swiftly to intercept the suspects.
Police recovered one rifle, one pistol and explosives during the operation.
The suspects face charges of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, conspiracy to commit a crime and possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle.
They are expected to appear in the Klerksdorp Magistrates’ Court soon.
