The FNB UP-Tuks juggernaut rolls on. In a pulsating round three encounter the Stripe Generation dispatched FNB Maties 33-17 to remain the only unbeaten side in the 2025 FNB Varsity Cup.

Playing in front of an electric home crowd that roared with every scrum, every breakdown, every inch gained, Tuks combined ruthless set-piece dominance with defensive steel to overpower their Stellenbosch rivals. This was a declaration that the men from Pretoria are setting the pace, and the rest better keep up.

Physicality sets the tone

From the opening whistle, this clash delivered on its billing. Both sides arrived in high spirits, buoyed by commanding victories in previous rounds, and the intensity was dialled up to maximum from kick-off.

The physical exchanges were brutal. Bodies flew into rucks. Shoulders clattered into ribs. No quarter asked, none given.

Tuks drew first blood in the 21st minute after dominating the early collisions. Lock Jean Fourie rumbled over from a trademark driving maul, the home pack steamrolling Maties backwards with frightening power. The foundations were laid.

Maties strike back with clinical double

But Stellenbosch didn’t travel to Pretoria to make up the numbers. Their response was swift and surgical.

Hooker CJ Erasmus levelled matters from, you guessed it, a driving maul of their own, Maties showing they could match Tuks in the heavyweight division. Minutes later, centre Ryan Manuel displayed predatory instincts, intercepting a loose pass and slicing through the Tuks defence to hand Maties the lead.

Flyhalf Christiaan van Heerden Smith was metronomic from the tee, converting both tries before adding a penalty. At the break, Maties held a commanding 17-5 advantage. The home faithful were silenced. The unbeaten streak looked vulnerable.

Stripe generation roar back

Whatever was said in the Tuks changing room at half-time, it worked. The hosts emerged rejuvenated, re-energised, and ready to rumble.

Munashe Dukuswa struck first, slipping through the Maties defensive line like a hot knife through butter to make it 12-17. The comeback was on.

Five minutes later, Tuks showed their scrum dominance. The Maties pack was caught napping, and Ben Jansen van Vuuren pounced, crashing over to level proceedings at 17-17. Game on.

Fourie and Austin seal the deal

The momentum had swung decisively. Tuks could smell blood, and they pressed their advantage with ruthless efficiency.

Fourie grabbed his brace, again from a driving maul, the Tuks lineout and maul proving an unstoppable weapon. The home side had their noses in front, and they weren’t about to relinquish the lead.

Wing Jayd Austin wrapped up a top-drawer individual performance with the final try, capping a dominant second-half display that saw Tuks outscore Maties 28-0 after the interval.

Final score: 33-17. Unbeaten streak intact.

Set-piece dominance proves decisive

The driving maul was the difference. Tuks used it like a battering ram, splintering Maties’ resistance and generating crucial metres and points. Fourie’s brace highlighted just how potent Tuks are from lineout platforms.

Their scrum work was equally impressive, particularly in catching Maties cold for Jansen van Vuuren’s equaliser. When the big boys up front deliver a platform like that, the game becomes significantly easier.

For UP-Tuks, this victory reinforces their status as the team to beat. Three rounds in, three wins on the board. They’re firing on all cylinders.

Tuks continue to set the standard. Their ability to grind out results when behind, their set-piece prowess, and their defensive resolve make them formidable opponents for anyone.

As the only unbeaten side remaining, they carry a target on their backs. But on this evidence, they’re more than capable of handling the pressure.
