WELKOM – Police have launched an inquest following the discovery of a body at the derelict Amogelang Mall (old Liberty Centre) in the Welkom Central Business District.

The body of an unknown African male was found floating in water at the abandoned shopping centre on Tuesday, 10 February, at approximately 13:00.

A member of the public alerted Welkom police to the discovery, and officers who attended the scene found the man motionless in the water. The deceased was in an advanced state of decomposition.

The man was wearing a green hooded top, grey T-shirt, and black tracksuit trousers, but no shoes. He is described as having a dark complexion with several tattoos on his left arm and chest.

Authorities are appealing to anyone with information that could help identify the deceased or locate his next of kin to come forward.
