UNITED STATES – American actor Eric Dane, beloved for his role as Dr Mark Sloan in the hit medical drama Grey’s Anatomy, has died at the age of 53 following a courageous fight against amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

The actor’s family confirmed his death in a statement on Thursday, saying: “With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS.”

Dane publicly revealed his diagnosis with the progressive neurological disorder, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, last year.

Television Career

The San Francisco-born actor made his television debut in 1991 with an appearance on “Saved by the Bell” before landing his breakout role in “Grey’s Anatomy” in 2006.

As the charming plastic surgeon Dr Mark Sloan, nicknamed “McSteamy” by fans, Dane became a household name and appeared in 139 episodes over 15 years until his character’s departure in 2021.

More recently, Dane starred in the HBO drama series “Euphoria”, showcasing his versatility as an actor beyond the medical drama that made him famous.

ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, gradually robbing patients of their ability to move, speak, and eventually breathe. The condition typically progresses rapidly, with most patients surviving two to five years after diagnosis.

Dane’s death highlights the devastating impact of this incurable disease, which affects thousands of people worldwide each year.
