Gerhard Fourie, chair of Subcouncil 7 of the City of Cape Town, said he will meet with the Durbanville police and other safety-and-security stakeholders next week to reinstate quarterly meetings with them and establish a drug action committee to address drug-related crime in Fisantekraal.

“These shootings are a huge concern,” he pointed out.

“Coetzee was reportedly on his way to work when his life was taken in a senseless act of violence,” posted Francois Berry, councillor for Ward 105 on Facebook. “Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.

“As ward councillor I want to state clearly that we cannot and will not allow criminals and gangsters to terrorise our community. The safety of our residents is non-negotiable.”

He said he had formally written to the relevant authorities to request that any army deployment to the Cape Flats include Fisantekraal.

“Our community deserves visible policing and decisive action to restore safety and stability. We call on the police to prioritise this investigation and to bring those responsible to justice swiftly.

“We also urge residents to continue working closely with police and the community safety structures, and to report any information that may assist the investigation.

“Fisantekraal is a resilient community. We stand united against violence and will continue to fight for safer streets for every resident.”

A resident of Fisantekral, who for fear of reprisals wished to remain anonymous, said Coetzee had grown up in front of her and she knew his parents well.

“He was a respectful person who always greeted me and asked how I am. He grew up in a very good home.”
