UKZN storm to top of Varsity Shield log with dominant 46-15 victory over SPU, running in eight tries at Howard College Stadium.
UKZN’s Impi stormed to the top of the Varsity Shield table on Friday evening after smashing SPU.

The Impi have arrived, and they mean business. In a statement performance, the University of Kwazulu Natal (FNB UKZN) dismantled the Sol Plaatjie University (FNB SPU) 46-15 at Howard College Rugby Stadium on Friday, storming to the top of the log with a ruthless eight-try display that left their Northern Cape opponents chasing shadows.

From the opening whistle to the final hooter, UKZN controlled proceedings with a combination of forward brutality and backline brilliance that suggests they’re not here to make up the numbers in the 2026 Varsity Shield.

The Gemmies battled gamely, crossing the whitewash three times, but against an Impi side firing on all cylinders, it was never going to be enough. UKZN’s powerful forward pack laid the foundation, and their clinical finishers did the rest.

Impi impose from the first whistle

There’s imposing your game plan, and then there’s what UKZN did on Friday. The Durban outfit came out with pace, precision, and physicality, the holy trinity of modern rugby, and SPU simply had no answers.

The forward pack set the tone early, dominating the collisions and providing front-foot ball that allowed the backs to operate with time and space. When your pack is winning the physical battle, everything else becomes easier, and UKZN exploited that advantage ruthlessly.

Eight tries tell their own story. That’s not luck or a few fortunate bounces, that’s systematic dominance. UKZN identified weaknesses in the SPU defensive structure and attacked them relentlessly, showing the kind of game management that championship-winning sides possess.

Gemmies show fight but lack firepower

Credit where it’s due, SPU didn’t roll over. The Gemmies managed three tries of their own, showing glimpses of attacking threat that will serve them well as the campaign progresses.

The reality is that SPU were second-best across the park. When UKZN’s forwards were rumbling through the middle, the Northern Cape side struggled to stem the tide. When the Impi spread it wide, SPU’s defensive line was stretched to breaking point.

At 46-15, the scoreline accurately reflects the gulf in class on the day. SPU will need to regroup quickly if they’re to remain competitive in what’s shaping up to be a fiercely contested Varsity Shield season.

Friday’s demolition job propelled UKZN to the top of the Varsity Shield log, and on this evidence, they won’t relinquish that position easily. The confidence and cohesion on display at Howard College suggested a side that has done its homework during the off-season.

For UKZN, this was the perfect start. Eight tries, a log-leading position, and a performance that sends a message to every other team in the competition: we’re here, we’re ready, and we’re not going anywhere.
