CAPE TOWN – In an urgent alert issued this morning the City urges residents to conserve water.

The City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate experienced an interruption in the raw water supply from the Theewaterskloof Dam to both the Blackheath and Faure Water Treatment plants overnight, resulting in the shutdown of both facilities.

This has reduced the City’s water production by approximately 55%, with a direct impact on bulk water storage levels and the water supply network across Cape Town. The cause of the interruption is currently being investigated by the National Department of Water and Sanitation.

The City stated that continued high water consumption will place additional pressure on the system and may negatively impact water supply if not reduced.

“City-wide residents are urged to reduce water use to essential purposes only to help maintain system stability and protect bulk water storage levels. Residents and businesses across the City are strongly requested to use water sparingly during this period while teams work to stabilise the system and restore full operations,” it was stated.
