The Varsity Cup and Shield is ready to kick off its 2026 edition.

CAPE TOWN – The V&A Waterfront amphitheatre was absolutely heaving as student rugby fever gripped the Mother City, with the official launch of the FNB Varsity Cup and FNB Varsity Shield 2026 season delivering exactly what the fans had been craving: pure rugby theatre, infectious energy, and a tantalising glimpse of the warriors who will be battling it out on the field.

This was not just another season launch. This was a statement.

The iconic Cape Town venue transformed into a pulsating celebration of everything that makes Varsity rugby the most electrifying spectacle in South African student sport. Fans poured through the gates in their thousands, draped in university colours, ready to make some noise and back their boys ahead of what promises to be an absolute belter of a season.

Captains, mascots and campus culture collide

The atmosphere reached fever pitch as captains from all three tournaments strode onto the stage alongside their university mascots, each leader representing the pride, passion, and potential of their respective institutions. The introductions alone were enough to set the tone: This season is going to be fiercely contested.

Cheerleaders brought the energy levels through the roof with explosive performances, whilst mascots and promoters worked the crowd like seasoned pros, dishing out sponsor giveaways and ensuring every supporter felt part of the Varsity rugby family. The sponsor activations scattered throughout the venue created an interactive experience that kept fans engaged from first whistle to last.

Cato Louw gets inside the captains’ minds

SuperSport presenter Cato Louw took control of proceedings, conducting compelling interviews with the tournament captains that gave supporters genuine insight into the mindset of the men who will be leading their teams into battle. From expectations and leadership philosophies to the butterflies already fluttering ahead of kick-off, the conversations reinforced the tournament’s Who’s NXT? narrative, a reminder that Varsity rugby continues to be the proving ground for South Africa’s next generation of Springbok talent.

The blend of broadcast-ready content and raw crowd interaction created an authentic connection between players and supporters, exactly what Varsity rugby is built on.

Game-changing rule alert: tap or kick

The launch also unveiled the newly introduced tap or kick rule, a bold innovation designed to inject even more attacking intent into matches that are already renowned for their flair and fearlessness.

Here is how it works: When a team scores a try, they will face a choice, take the conventional conversion kick for two points, or opt for a tap on the 22m line. Choose the tap, and you will have 120 seconds to score another try and pocket a further five points.

It is high-risk, high-reward rugby at its finest, and it is guaranteed to produce edge-of-your-seat moments as captains weigh up whether to play it safe or go for broke. Expect this rule to spark heated tactical debates in coaching boxes and on the terraces throughout the season.

The countdown is over

With the FNB Varsity Shield kicking off on 13 February and the FNB Varsity Cup opening round following on 16 February, the wait is almost over. The players have done the pre-season grind, the captains have been crowned, and the fans have made their presence felt.
