Internationally-acclaimed choreographer Gregory Maqoma brings his latest creation to the Baxter Theatre this month with the world premiere of Genesis:The Beginning and End of Time, an innovative dance opera blending movement, music and poetry.
The groundbreaking production runs for five performances only from Wednesday 18 to Saturday 21 February, with evening shows at 19:30 and a Saturday matinée at 15:00.
Genesis follows Maqoma’s critically-acclaimed Baxter seasons of Exit/Exist (2023 a Fleur du Cap Encore Award winner), and Cion: Requiem of Ravel’s Bolero (2024).
The new work promises a visceral exploration of creation, transformation and existence’s infinite cycles.

“The Baxter has been more than a venue,” said Maqoma, “it’s been a partner in my journey as a dancer and choreographer. Their support allows me to confront time itself in Genesis: its violence, its grace and its invitation to begin again.”
Creative team
The production features an acclaimed creative team.
Live music will be performed by Mthwakazi Chosi, Annalyzer, Yogin Sulaphin and Xolilisle Bongwana, with musical direction by Nhlanhla Mahangu. Poet Anelisa Phewa delivers powerful spoken word elements, while the libretto comes from celebrated writer Karthika Nair.

Design elements include costumes by Jacques van der Watt (Black Coffee Fashion), lighting by Oliver Hauser and set design by Willy Cesar.
Maqoma is the founder and creative director of Vuyani Dance Theatre, established in 1999, and the director of Gregory Maqoma Industries. Renowned for his collaborative vision, he has produced world-class work that has toured to over 100 cities across five continents.
His recent accolades include the French Government’s Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (2017), World Dance Day Author (2020), and in 2024 alone, the Fleur du Cap Encore Award, an Olivier Award nomination, and multiple national honours.
Following its Cape Town run, Genesis transfers to Joburg Theatre from 19 to 22 March.
